19-Sept 2008 Paris Blog #4

Friday 19 Sept

NOTE: If you click on the pictures they enlarge.....

School again, boy am I glad today was Friday!
Here is a photo of me, my classmates and my professor, we really have had a fun week.
Germany, China, Japan, Paris - Professor, Japan, Germany, Korea, USA, Toronto, Usbekistan, Japan, UK, Colombia (L-R)

I am happy to have a weekend! Tomorrow night is the TECHNO Parade... yes Techno Music, but sponsored by Virgin Air. It is a big deal and supposedly very fun.

After class I ran some errands, went to the tailor to have my new pants hemmed up, food shopping, etc.

I ate a quick lunch and then went across the street to the cemetery, seriously across the street from my house. On the other side of the wall is the grave site of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in Cimetière du Montparnasse! Here is a pic and more info:

They are buried on top of each other, yes it is what it means....

So, I brought my new Alec Labrano book and sat on a bench and read, the weather was perfect and Mr. Andre Citroen was right behind me, buried of course. Which was a coincidence as on my way out I say the newer retro styled 2cv, this was the famous little free "beetle-looking" car in the old French movies. They have remade it, the side pillars and roof come off totally or in parts to make it either a rag top or a complete convertible.
This is a very cool car, but I still love the old one, picture below. There is a company that gives tours of Paris with you in the back seat of the older one. They can go 0-60 in 10 minutes! Literally the old one was measured in Squirrel power not horse power. The new one is stronger and more luxurious.

Here are two fun shots...
The graves are probably as expensive as the apartments in the background over looking them...

It is possible to short term rent (10 years!)

But moving arrangements after 10 years could kill a person...

That damn tower again, the modern and the old. This is one of the few places in my area that you notice the tower. We have so many trees that on the street you don't really see it as there are no open spaces to look up.

The cemetery is divided into a smaller and larger one. There is road in between the walls. I was crossing when I was nearly run down by a fast moving car. Guess what it was? An old Fiat 500. I also learned that the French are terrified of having their picture taken while driving. I guess they have been dealing with highway radar cameras that automatically snap photos of speeders so a fine can be mailed out. So if you are in France and someone cuts you off in a car take a picture, this guy slammed on his brakes and got out of the car, I ducked into the cemetery at that point.

It is nice to go down the street and have a late night drink, a kir in my case, and then off to bed. I have so many great little places on every corner near my place. I am really loving the 14eme.
